What to Expect at a Candle-Making Workshop in NYC
Looking for a creative date night, a fun activity with friends, or just something different to do in NYC? A candle-making workshop lets you get creative, play with fragrances, and leave with something you actually will use.
If you've never made a candle before, here's what to expect at Vela in the heart of NYC!

Start with the fun part: Customize your candle
Your first (and arguably most important) job is deciding what your candle should look and smell like. Pick your favorite from 12 jar colors and explore our fragrance collection to choose your favorites. Love one exactly as it is? Great. Want to mix a few together? Even better! You'll experiment with different combinations and proportions to create your own custom scent. Fresh and clean, fruity, floral, woody, sweet... There are plenty of directions to go, and we'll help if you have no idea where to start.
Make your candle
Once you've landed on the one, it's time to turn your fragrance into a candle.
We'll walk you through the candle-making process, from measuring your fragrance to melting your wax, and mixing and pouring your candle. We are the only studio in NYC that lets you melt your own wax, and our workshops are completely beginner-friendly, so we'll guide you through everything step by step.
Come with a date, friends, or the whole group
Candle making is hands-on without being too hands-on, which makes it a great social activity. You can actually talk while you're doing it, and discover whether your date has deeply questionable scent preferences. Our Hell's Kitchen studio hosts public workshops as well as private events for birthdays, celebrations, and groups of up to 14 guests. For larger groups and corporate events, we can bring the candle-making experience to you.
When do I get my candle?
Freshly poured candles need some time to cool and set, so your creation will need to stay with us after class for 1 hour. Once it's ready, you can come back to the studio to pick it up (or stop by another day!). A little delayed gratification, but totally worth it.
